The Steinbach Regional Secondary School captured the Zone 13 High School fastpitch championship banner Wednesday at A.D. Penner Park.

Kori Gryba went five innings allowing two runs on three hits and struck out 12 as the Sabres defeated Gabrielle Roy 9-2 in the Zone final.

SRSS catcher Jayde Gryba had four hits and said energy and communication was the key against Les Roys.

"Energy is a huge thing because you can get the momentum for the other team and use that to drive in runs to get everyone into the game."

Sonya Goertzen, who got the final three outs of the game for the Sabres, went 3-for-4 at the plate.

"That's a good team over there," said Gabrielle Roy coach Murray Woodward. "They've got a good mix of A & B ball players. They've got lots of fire power. We only did go six innings but the game was closer that what the score said. I thought the girls did well."

Gillian Woodward got the start for Les Roys and gave her team a chance until Steinbach Regional pulled away late in the game.

"We knew that Gabrielle Roy would come with their best," said SRSS coach Lawney Penner. "They've got a really good top pitcher there. It's always good to go back to provincials. Even though we are hosting this year, we wanted to get there by winning."

The Sabres beat the Lorette Scorpions 17-0 and the Ste. Anne Lynx 21-0 in the round robin.

Steinbach Regional then downed the Green Valley Pirates 22-3 in the semifinals.

Gabrielle Roy beat Ecole Edward Schreyer School of Beausejour 11-1 and blanked Green Valley 11-0 in the round robin.

Les Roys defeated Lorette 7-2 in the semifinals.

The Provincial High School Fastpitch Championship will take place June 2nd & 3rd in Mitchell.
