The Winnipeg Blue Bombers lost their starting quarterback and running back to injuries and also failed to clinch second place in the CFL West Divison for the second week in a row.

Jonathon Jennings completed 30-of-40 passes for 408 yards and four touchdowns as the B.C. Lions defeated Winnipeg 36-27 Saturday at Investors Group Field.

“He played a heck of a game,” said Blue Bombers defensive back Kevin Fogg on Jennings’ performance. “He’s a guy that can give you problems and so we just have to continue to contain the people that can make plays and stick to our kind of defense.”

B.C. won the time of possession battle by a huge margin as the Lions had the Winnipeg defense on the field for over 36 minutes.

“The execution once again wasn’t at the level we needed,” said Blue Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea who watched his football team lose back-to-back games for the first time this season. “There was busts on defense and drops on offense and missed blocks. It wasn’t effort. It’s focus and execution.

The Winnipeg offense couldn’t find the Lions end zone but the special teams did.

Derek Jones blocked a Ty Long punt and Mike Miller scooped up the loose ball and went 17 yards to pay dirt.

Justin Medlock was good on all seven of his field goal attempts.

Starting quarterback Matt Nichols left the game late in the first quarter with a lower body injury and the offense struggled to move the football with Dominique Davis and later Dan Lefevour calling the signals.

Andrew Harris, who carried the ball eight times for 64 yards, suffered a concussion with five minutes left in the fourth quarter when he took a swing pass from Lefevour and was drilled by Lions linebacker Dyshawn Davis.

Nichols and Harris will be reevaluated Sunday and their playing status for game 18 will be determined next week.

Winnipeg slotback Weston Dressler says they can battle through their current injury situation.

“Everyone’s got a role. Everyone’s got a job to do every play. If we take care of that good things will happen regardless of who we have in there. We have the guys in the locker room to win football games. We hope for the best for Matt and Andrew. Obviously those guys are key to what we do, but as players, we just got to be better than we were today.”

Winnipeg would have clinched second place with an Edmonton loss to Calgary Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium but the Eskimos won 29-20.

So now it comes down to the final weekend of the regular season schedule.

The Blue Bombers will need a victory over the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium or an Edmonton loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina to finish in second place and have the home field advantage in the West semifinal.
