The Ste. Anne Aces are Carillon Senior Hockey League champions for the third time.

The Aces scored three unanswered second period goals en route to a 4-2 victory over the Red River Wild in the deciding 7th game of the CSHL final Wednesday at a jam packed Ste. Anne arena.

Miguel Rondeau, Steph Pattyn and Colan Jackson did the damage for the Aces in the middle frame.

"We just kept coming hard," said Rondeau. "We got pucks deep, took care of our own end and limited the turnovers. We took advantage of chances and actually managed to bury some."

After a scoreless first period, Marc Sabourin gave Red River a 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the second as he ripped a snap shot past Ste. Anne goaltender Guy St. Vincent.

A slashing penalty to the Aces netminder midway through the period gave the Wild a great opportunity to extend their lead but it was the home team who got on the board.

Rondeau scored a shorthanded goal to square game seven at 1-1.

"They seem to push on the penalty kill and they've caught us a couple of other games as well," said Red River captain Cole Brunet. "In a close and tight knit game you can't give that up. Little bit deflating after that but that's the way it goes."

Game seven stayed 3-1 for the Aces until Sabourin made it real interesting when he notched his second of night with 1:34 left in regulation.

Ste. Anne held on and Brent Wold sealed the deal when he scored an empty netter with 14 seconds remaining on the clock.

"I don't think many words can describe this feeling," said St. Vincent shortly after game seven. "This is the first time that I've experienced it at home. I've been gone so long and now I have a chance to win a championship at home. It doesn't get any sweeter than this. I have family here. My in-laws are here all the way from Louisiana. This is special. This is real special."

Ste. Anne coach Kevin Lansard said it was a hard fought series against a very good Wild team.

"There's a reason why they made the final. Two teams that have great goaltending and full lineups because during the playoffs you're going to have injuries. They skate hard and they pushed us hard. We just felt that if we stuck to our game and managed the game well, that we would come out on top. It wasn't as easy as we were hoping it would be, but that's credit to them."

As for winning back-to-back CSHL titles.

"It feels pretty good," said Aces captain Steph Pattyn. "Now we want to set our goals for provincials and try to bring home a provincial championship."

Ste. Anne will play its two Manitoba Cup round robin games this weekend at MTS Iceplex.

The Aces will face the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League champion Notre Dame Hawks on Saturday and the Carberry Plainsmen on Sunday.

The Plainsmen lost out to the Killarney Shamrocks in the Tiger Hills Hockey League final.
