Providence women’s basketball continued their great play this season as they defeated the CMU Blazers Friday night 64-61, handing the Blazers their first loss of the season. The atmosphere was electric for the last home games of the season, as Providence seniors Alison Zajac, Taylor Goodbrandson and Joanne Schwarz were recognized in their last home games in a Providence uniform.

The rematch Saturday night saw the Blazers respond with a 54-42 win. The Pilots were led by players Allison Zajac (34 points), Katelin Thiessen (14 points), and Hannah Van Schie (10 points).
Men’s basketball and currently seeded 6th, lost both games against the 5th seeded Blazers.

Friday night had CMU make a late push for a 98-91 comeback win, and Saturday the Blazers followed it up with an 80-74 win. Top scorers for the Pilots were Kendall Perpall (27points) and Jordan Lawson (24 points). Graduating senior Pilots recognized Friday night were Cash Blanca and Braxton Phommarath.

Thursday, January 24th saw the Pilots women’s volleyball team (2-10 in conference play) win their second match in a row as they defeated St. Boniface University 3-1, all close games. Pilots were led by Maddie Fehr with 11 kills, 10 digs, and 3 aces, and Katy Warkentine who had 6 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces. Currently sitting one spot out of the top four in MCAC standings, the Pilots are making a late push in the season in an attempt to qualify for the MCAC Championships, which will be hosted at Providence February 23rd & 24th.

Pilots men’s volleyball also took to the court Thursday in hopes of taking a lead in the head-to-head matchup against Les Rouges de St. Boniface, with the Pilots sitting 3rd in the standings and Les Rouges in 2nd. Les Rouges, currently on a six-match win streak proved why they are playing so well as of late, dominating play with a 3-0 match win. Key players for the Pilots were Matt Friesen and Brett Foley.

Providence Futsal teams were also in action with a busy Saturday, facing Assiniboine Community College Cougars and Brandon University Bobcats. Pilots women sit in last place in the MCAC and were hoping for a turnaround weekend against the 5th seeded Cougars and 4th seeded Bobcats. Unfortunately, the Pilots lost both matches 2-6 and 1-5 respectively. Top players for the Pilots were Lexi Koop, Zoe Kriznic and Amelia Reimer, all with 1 goal each.

Pilots men’s futsal, currently seeded 4th, faced off against the Cougars, seeded 5th, and the Bobcats, currently in first place in the MCAC standings. Results of the games matched the standings, with the Pilots defeating the Cougars 7-0 and losing to the Bobcats 2-5. Top performers for the Pilots include goalie Jay Thielman who had a shutout.

Next action for Pilots basketball is February 8th & 9th at the MCAC Championships, hosted by Canadian Mennonite University.
