Last week’s Village News column commented on the awards won by Bothwell Cheese at the recent British Empire Cheese Show. It also mentioned a medal won by Klaas W. Reimer at a New York show in 1901 which is now in our collection. The day following the writing of that article, we learned that the Parmalat Canada Cheese plant in Grunthal won a first-place award for its Feta cheese at the same British Empire Cheese Show. In response to these great news stories, our curators have put the 1901 medal out on exhibit in our foyer. It’s a great reminder of the significant role of cheese manufacturing in this area over more than a century.
