May 12 is officially designated “Manitoba Day,” the day we celebrate our province’s birthday. Since May 12 fell on a Sunday this year, MHV chose to celebrate Manitoba’s 143rd birthday on Friday, May 10. About 50 Grade Two students from South Oaks School in Grunthal came for an interpretive tour and a horse-drawn wagon ride. We started the day with a flag-raising ceremony, which included some facts about the Golden Boy, words from Steinbach’s Mayor Chris Goertzen and local MLA Kelvin Goertzen, challenging the children to make Manitoba a better place to live, even better than it already is today. After the flag was raised by Devon Guenther and several students, Christie Penner sang ”The Manitoba Song.” The rain held off almost long enough to allow the group to finish their interpretive tour and wagon rides.
