National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will be recognized tomorrow across Canada.

Michelle Bezditny is Executive Director for Steinbach Chamber of Commerce. She says September 30th will honour the lost children and survivors of residential schools. Bezditny notes public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and the ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

On June 30th of this year, Parliament created this federal statutory holiday. Bezditny says what that means is that federally regulated workplaces will be closed tomorrow. This includes such things as financial institutions and federal crown corporations.

For non-federally regulated workplaces, Bezditny says they have independently chosen whether to close tomorrow or remain open. Here in Steinbach, many of those businesses have opted to be open. For example:

Canadian Tire will be open from 8 am to 8 pm
Clearspring Centre will be open from 10 am to 8 pm
Shoppers Drug Mart will be open from 8 am to midnight
Sobeys will be open from 7 am to 10 pm
Superstore will be open from 8 am to 10 pm
Walmart will be open from 7am to 10 pm

Meanwhile, Bezditny says the Steinbach Aquatic Centre will run public swim sessions from 1 to 3pm and then again from 4 to 6 pm. The Jake Epp Library will remain closed all day.
