A video from Sunday's matchup between Valour FC and HFX Wanderers in Winnipeg has wracked up millions of views from people all around the globe.

The play in question even had the play-by-play announcer asking, "What in the world?" after the play.

Just 17 minutes into the game Winnipeg's football club was putting pressure on HFX and pushing to the goal. Moses Dyer set up Alessandro Riggi with a perfect pass in the penalty box. Riggi's shot hit the goalkeeper but continued to move past and was easily going into the net.

That was, until teammate William Akio came rushing in and kicked the ball away from the net right as it was on the goal line.

For his part, Akio says it was as simple as making a mistake while on the job.

"I want to start off by saying I'm happy for the 3pts and our teams (sic) resilience last night," Akio writes in a statement on his Twitter Monday afternoon.

Akio indicates that he was attempting to help the ball get across the line and missed. "I really just missed a WIDE OPEN net it’s simple as that. Everyone makes mistakes on the job, it’s part of life. I will bounce back as I always have in life and football."

Despite the gaff, the Winnipeg soccer club came away with a 1-0 win and improved to 5-4-4 on the season. Valour does not return home until Saturday, July 30, when they take on Pacific FC.
