It was a weekend the SRSS Athletics coach won’t soon forget as she watched her students participate in the 2022 Provincial High School Track meet at the University of Manitoba last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Steinbach Regional Secondary School athletes were competing at the Provincial High School Track and Field events at the University of Manitoba.  

Sara Oswald says they had 24 students qualify for the events, “which is the biggest group that we've qualified since I've been a coach here, which has been about six years now, so that was really exciting!”  

Oswald says it was great to see students competing from communities across Manitoba, including Thompson, Brandon, Winnipeg, Niverville, Steinbach Christian as well as other students in the Hanover School Division.  

As to how the athletes performed, she says, “We had a lot of Top 5 and Top 10 finishes. And those 4th place finishes were a little heartbreaking for some of them, but it's really cool to be considered a Top 10 school in a lot of the athletics.” 

Looking ahead to the next ‘uninterrupted’ season of Track & Field Oswald says, “We’ll start with cross country in the fall and a lot of our distance athletes will do that. Then in the winter we compete in the Athletics Manitoba Indoor Track and Field Series so come December, we start training again and we will train from December through to March and then take a little break and then get right back up once the snow is gone.” 

When it comes to top athletes from this group Oswald highlights Grade 12 student, Reese Tufford. “She has been an athlete with us since Grade 9 and she has taken on training on her own even during the pandemic and she was a Top 5 finisher this past weekend.”   

She also takes a moment to thank her assistant coach Eden Jamieson, as well as Daniel Grant and Jayson Betker, “who were also helping out throughout the season, so it was a full team effort and we made it through.”
