The T.G. Smith Centre in Steinbach has begun the busiest stretch of the year.

Jason Peters with Steinbach Parks and Recreation says right now the arena schedule is the busiest it has been since he started twelve years ago. He notes it started on Friday with the beginning of the weekend-long Peewee Classic Tournament.

“We are probably up two or three weekend events in general this year and it seems they are really running back to back here in January, so frequently we have lots of events but they are spaced out a little more and this year, just the way the tournaments are broken down, it makes or arena a busy place.”

Peters says there will be big weekend events at the arena for the next four consecutive weekends. He says the busyness is a good thing, but it does have an effect on regular activities.

“You'll notice that the typical public skating times for this weekend and next weekend will be affected. Where we can, we try to fit the extra times in, but in all likelihood, indoor public skating will be scarce for the next two weeks.”

Peters says regular public skate times should resume in the last week of January. He notes in the meantime, residents can check the city website for adjusted times or use the outdoor rink anytime. He adds during the weekend events parking can be difficult especially during business hours when the SCU is open and they need the spaces for employees and customers.

“We encourage people when possible to drop their kids off at the door then find a parking spot. I am a hockey parent myself, I deal with that regularly and it can be a challenge at times. Get there early, show a little bit of patience and everybody gets through it.”
