The Carillon Sultans meet the defending Manitoba Junior Baseball League champion Elmwood Giants tonight in Steinbach. The Sultans, who lost 6-1 to the Giants last Wednesday in Winnipeg, are in second place in the MJBL with a 12 and 8 record. Elmwood is in first place at 16 and 3.

Kelly Reimer got the win as the Mitchell Mavericks edged the defending Southeastern Fastball League champion Grunthal Generals 5-4 in extra innings last night. Doug Fehr hit a two-run homer as the Eagles doubled up on the Ravens 4-2. The Ravens are in first place at 5 and 3. The Generals and Eagles are tied for second place at 4 and 3. The Mavericks are 2 and 6.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes gave up eight runs in the fourth inning and four more in the bottom of the ninth in dropping a 12-10 decision to the defending Northern Baseball League champion Gary Southshore Railcats. The Goldeyes, who banged out 18 hits last night, committed four errors. Winnipeg trailed 8-3 after four innings but rallied with three runs in the seventh, two in the eighth and one more run in the ninth to take a 10-8 lead. The Goldeyes are still three games back of the West Division leading Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks who lost 4-3 in 11 innings to the Edmonton Cracker-Cats.

Burke Wiebe of Southwood and Nathan Wazney of Elmhurst had the low rounds on day one of the Provincial Junior Men's Golf Championship. Wiebe was 2 under par 70 at Breezy Bend while Wazney was one under par 70 at Carman. Rene Landry of Lorette was 81 at Carman while Brendan Baldwin of Oakwood was 97. Alec Lafreniere of Oakwood was 94 at Breezy Bend. Golfers will switch courses for todays second round.
