It's not what the Steinbach Arts Council had hoped to hear.  On Tuesday night City council denied its request for a $70,000.00 grant toward a summer renovation project.  Council agreed its bylaws clearly state grants will only be considered in February, prior to the budget being finalized.  Deputy Mayor Dwight Reimer suggested the city give the Arts Council a $70,000.00 loan that could be erased by a future grant.  But the motion was voted down 5-1.  Executive policy chair David Banman and Mayor Les Magnusson say the proposal has council's support and will be given priority consideration in 2007.  Councillor Art Rempel excused himself from the debate since he is a member of the Arts Council and did not want to be in a conflict of interest.
