The Staff Sergeant for Steinbach R.C.M.P. has made a passionate plea to city council for more officers.
Jake Hiebert told council Tuesday night, the detachment is understaffed and personnel are putting in many hours of unpaid overtime to try and keep up. He has asked the city to spend an additional $200,000.00 a year to add 2 officers and a clerk, starting in 2008. Staff Sergeant Hiebert notes the population of Steinbach has doubled in the last 30 years, but the detachment has grown by only 2 officers since then. Mayor Chris Goertzen says council will take a serious look at this matter. He notes one of his campaign platforms as good policing and he intends to uphold that pledge.
