Steinbach city council has effectively terminated the zoning category called Rural Residential Service. That means no more private wells as the source of drinking water in new residential subdivisions. The only exceptions are 2 lots along Old Tom Road that are surrounded by RRS lots. This change was initiated by the previous council out of concern the proliferation of wells could lead to increased risk of contaminating underground water supplies. Councillor Art Rempel is pleased to see the new council follow through with final approval. He says as a growing city, Steinbach needs to put this practice in its past. RRS zoning was first put into place as a way of developing less costly building lots in the quest for affordable housing.
