About 400 students at the Steinbach Regional will be able to wrap up their school day by 3pm starting this September. The catch?  They have to start classes at 8am.  Hanover Superintendent John Peters says the board has approved the schedule change on a one year trial basis to deal with crowding at the school.  Students in Mitchell, Kokomo Road area and those who qualify for urban busing in Steinbach will be able to start school at this earlier time.  The change will add one period to the school day.  Peters notes there are some additional benefits to the change.  Right now some students have very little or no time for lunch if they take band or choir.  This will give them one more opportunity to have a lunch hour.  It will also take pressure off the bus system.  About 400 students will be transported earlier freeing up the same amount of space for younger students on later runs.  Peters notes initially there will be more cost because of the extra bus run.  But they should save money in the long run because the Division won't have to buy additional buses for these students.  Core subjects will be taught during the first period in the morning and will be repeated later in the day ensuring no student misses a required course.  The intent is to free up vocational teachers who will then be able to spend more time in their vocational labs.
