The Niverville Clippers have advanced to round two of the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League playoffs. Derek Plett scored the go-ahead goal 6:50 into the third period as the Clippers edged the Red River Mudbugs 4-3 in St. Jean in the fifth and deciding game of their opening round series. It was the only win for a visiting team in the series. Dylan Peters, Matt Hill and Pat Robidoux also scored for Niverville. Brock Harms, Ethan Franz and Bryson Loewen replied for the Mudbugs. The Clippers meet the Lorette Comets tonight in Ile des Chenes in game one of their best-of-seven semifinal. The Steinbach Huskies face the Springfield Xtreme tonight in Oakbank. The Huskies defeated the Xtreme 6-3 in their series opener this past Sunday at the T.G. Smith Centre.

 

Steinbach Pistons defenseman Zac Patrick is a Manitoba Junior Hockey League Star of the Week. The 20-year-old Winnipeg native had a pair of third period goals in the Pistons 6-5 victory over the Steelers in Selkirk last Friday. The Steinbach captain recorded a goal and two assists the following night at the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex as the Pistons downed the Winnipeg Freeze 6-1.

 

Baseball Manitoba has announced its 2022 Provincial Championship schedule. Carillon Minor Baseball will host three Provincial AAA Qualifiers this summer. La Broquerie will host the 18U qualifier July 8th-10th. Seine River will host the 15U qualifier July 22nd-24th. Niverville will be the site of the 13U qualifier July 22nd-24th.

 

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed receiver T.J. Simmons and defensive back Tyrique Mcghee. Simmons spent three years as a Mountaineer, hauling in 86 receptions for 1,197 yards and nine touchdowns at West Virginia. The Birmingham native spent the first year of his collegiate career at Alabama before deciding to transfer to West Virginia. In 2020, Simmons finished 33rd nationally and 2nd in the Big 12 in yards per receptions (17.4). After going undrafted, Simmons signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but was released during training camp last year. Mcghee spent the 2020 season on the L.A. Rams practice squad. He played in 50 games with the Georgia Bulldogs at a variety of defensive back positions, recording 53 total tackles, nine pass deflections, two forced fumbles and two interceptions.
