The Steinbach Huskies will play in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League final for the first time in eight years. Kail Penner scored twice and Logan Funk had three assists as Steinbach defeated Niverville 5-1 Monday night at the T.G. Smith Centre. Ethan Unger, Mason Martens and Keyan Grimard also scored for the Huskies who took the best-of-seven semifinal four games to one. Logan Unger had the lone goal for the Clippers. Steinbach will meet either the Springfield Xtreme or Red River Mudbugs in the final. The Xtreme have a 3-2 lead in their semifinal and will host game six Thursday in Oakbank. 


The Manitoba Junior Hockey League has announced its award winners for the 2022-23 season. Lucas Brennan of the Selkirk Steelers is the MVP. The Top Goaltender Award went to Kobe Grant of the Swan Valley Stampeders. Selkirk's Carter Cormier is the Rookie of the Year. Trent Sambrook of the Winkler Flyers is the Top Defenseman. Ryan Botterill of the Portage Terriers is the recipient of the Frank McKinnon Memorial Award and Tyson Ramsey of the Virden Oil Capitals is the Coach of the Year.


The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced Monday its final CJHL Top 20 Rankings for the 2022-23 season. The Portage Terriers dropped from number seven to eight and the Steinbach Pistons fell from number 11 to 12. The Alberta Junior Hockey League's Brooks Bandits finished atop the national listings. Brooks wrapped up its regular season with an AJHL-best record of 53-5-1-1 and will enter the league playoffs as its top seed.


The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 3-2 decision to San Jose at Canada Life Centre. Tomas Hertl scored the tying goal for the Sharks with goaltender James Reimer on the bench for an extra attacker with 11 seconds left in regulation and Logan Couture potted the winner on a breakaway 1:21 into overtime. Nate Schmidt's sixth of the season at 14:53 of the third period gave the Jets a 2-1 lead. Nino Niederreiter had the other Winnipeg goal. The Jets wrap up their three-game homestand Wednesday against the Minnesota Wild. 


Matt Dunstone has a 3-0 record and Reid Carruthers is 2-2 at the Brier in London, Ontario. Dunstone defeated Jamie Koe of Northwest Territories 10-4. Carruthers fell 9-7 in an extra end to Kevin Koe of Alberta. Dunstone will put his perfect record on the line on the 8 a.m. draw against Matthew Manuel of Nova Scotia. Dunstone and Carruthers will then meet on the 8 p.m. draw in a rematch of last month's Viterra final in Neepawa. 


Manitoba champions Jennifer Jones, Karlee Burgess, Mackenzie Zacharias, Lauren Lenentine and Emily Zacharias lost out in the final of the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts to Kerri Einarson last month in Kamloops. Mackenzie Zacharias will join Clayton Dreger on This Week in Curling which airs Tuesdays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
