The Chicago Blackhawks selected Connor Bedard with the first overall pick of the 2023 National Hockey League Draft Wednesday night in Nashville. The 17-year-old North Vancouver native had 71 goals and 72 assists in 57 games with the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats this past season. He added 10 goals and 10 assists in seven playoff games. Brandon Wheat Kings forward Nate Danielson went ninth overall to the Detroit Red Wings. The 18-year-old Brandon native led the Wheat Kings in goals (33), assists (45), points (78), power-play goals (13) and short-handed goals (three), and tied for the lead in game-winning goals (five) in 68 games. Zach Benson was chosen by the Buffalo Sabres with the 13th pick in round one. The Langley, B.C. native had 98 points with the Winnipeg Ice and finished third in WHL scoring. The Winnipeg Jets selected forward Colby Barlow 18th overall. The Owen Sound Attack captain had 79 points (46 goals, 33 assists), 13 power-play goals and 12 game-winning goals in 59 games and received the Bobby Smith Trophy, awarded to the Ontario Hockey League's Scholastic Player of the Year. The draft ends today with rounds 2-7. The Anaheim Ducks are on the clock at 10 a.m. with the first pick of round two.


The Carillon Sultans game against the Braves in Springfield was rained out Wednesday night. The Sultans, who have a 9-3 record in the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League, will meet the Stonewall Blue Jays next Tuesday at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes winning streak has reached five games. The Fish plated five runs in the first inning en route to a 10-7 victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park. Goldeyes designated hitter Max Murphy homered for the fourth straight game. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added American defensive back Tyrique McGhee to the practice roster. McGhee was in training camp with the Bombers this season before being injured and subsequently released. He spent the 2020 season on the L.A. Rams’ practice squad. McGhee played in 50 games with the Georgia Bulldogs at a variety of defensive back positions, recording 53 total tackles, nine pass deflections, two forced fumbles and two interceptions.
