Ben Gigolyk went 6-for-11 from three-point range and finished the night with 21 points as the Steinbach Regional varsity boys basketball team downed the J.H. Bruns Broncos 63-48. Ali Ballares added 12 points and five steals while Rovic Duaqui had 11 rebounds and six steals for the Sabres who have a 1-1 record in the South Central Athletic Conference. The SRSS varsity girls defeated the St. Norbert Celtics 42-38 and improved to 2-1 in the SCAC.


Mark Plett and Colton Wiebe scored two goals each as Steinbach Regional downed the Oak Park Raiders 6-1 at the T.G. Smith Centre. Lucas Jolicoeur and Dominic Rooney also scored for the Sabres who have 10 wins, four regulation losses, two overtime losses and a shootout loss in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League's Platinum Promotions Division. 


The Steinbach Pistons have lost three games in a row for the first time this season. Brock Moroz made 43 saves as the Winnipeg Blues defeated Steinbach 4-1 at the T.G. Smith Centre. Kirk Mullen had the lone goal for the Pistons who trailed 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 after 40 minutes. Steinbach now has company atop the MJHL's East Division standings. The Portage Terriers won their seventh straight beating the Flyers 4-3 in Winkler. The Terriers and Pistons both have 56 points. Portage has three games in hand on Steinbach. 


Andrew Dyck and Bryson Loewen scored three goals each as the Red River Mudbugs downed the Macdonald Swarm 8-4 in St. Jean. Lucas Dyck and Cole Martens also scored for the Mudbugs who moved within one point of the Springfield Xtreme in the race for second place in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League. Eric Bossyut, Coltyn Plaitin, Talon Weselak and Adam Bossuyt replied for the Swarm.


Carson Lambos scored twice and Zach Benson and Connor McClennon each had a goal and three helpers as the Winnipeg Ice defeated the Raiders 8-1 in Prince Albert. Carson Latimer, Conor Geekie, Easton Armstrong and Ty Nash also scored for the visitors. 


The Manitoba Moose gave up three first period goals and lost 6-2 to the Chicago Wolves at Canada Life Centre. Leon Gawanke and Brayden Burke did the goal scoring for the Moose.


Julie Van Ryssel of Springfield will face Morgan Maguet of East St. Paul at 11 a.m. in the B event of the 2023 Provincial Junior Curling Championships in Portage. Van Ryssel, who lost her opener to Dayna Wahl of Altona on Tuesday night, defeated Bethany Allen of the Granite 9-3 Wednesday morning. Katy Lukowich of the Granite will take on Zoey Terrick of the Heather at 3:30 p.m. in the A event final. The winner advances to this weekend's page playoff. The loser drops to the B event final. Aaron Van Ryssel of Springfield beat Colton Olafson of Portage 8-7 in his round robin opener on Wednesday. Van Ryssel will meet Zach Norris of Morris at 11 a.m.

 

Steinbach has lost three in a row after dropping a 4-1 decision to the Winnipeg Blues Wednesday night at the T.G. Smith Centre. Head coach Paul Dyck will join Clayton Dreger on the Pistons Report which airs Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
