Six Provincial junior varsity volleyball champions were crowned Saturday. Gabrielle Roy Les Roys swept Rosenort 25-20, 25-18 in the A/AA boys final in Hamiota. Gabrielle Roy’s David Lemoine was chosen the MVP while Martin de Moissac, Alek Ouimet and Jacob Boisjoli were named to the All-Star team. Gilbert Plains defeated Rosenort 25-19, 25-13 in the A/AA girls final in Russell. Gabrielle Roy lost to Major Pratt in the quarterfinals. The Neelin Spartans swept College Beliveau 28-26, 25-20 in the AAA boys final in Winkler. Steinbach Christian lost to the Spartans in the quarterfinals. Neelin defeated Leo Remillard 17-25, 25-12, 15-6 in the AAA girls final in Altona. The Niverville Panthers lost to John Taylor in the quarterfinals. Glenlawn and College Jeanne-Sauve captured the AAAA championships in Brandon. The Lions defeated River East 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18 in the boys final. Steinbach Regional lost to Glenlawn in the quarterfinals. The Olympiens swept the Lord Selkirk Royals 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 in the girls final. The Sabres lost to Lord Selkirk in the semifinals. Callie Andres of the SRSS was named to the All-Star team.


Steinbach Regional will face the Vincent Massey Trojans in the semifinals of the Provincial AAAA High School varsity boys volleyball championship Thursday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on the campus of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. The Sabres defeated the River East Kodiaks 25-18, 16-25, 25-20, 25-14 in the quarterfinals Saturday at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. The St. Paul’s Crusaders will meet the Lord Selkirk Royals in the other semifinal. The SRSS girls lost out to Lord Selkirk in the quarterfinals. The Royals beat the SCAC champions 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18. The Niverville Panthers lost to Brandon Vincent Massey. The Vikings defeated the Panthers 25-20, 25-20, 15-25, 22-25, 15-12 in the quarterfinals.


The Eastman Selects eight-game losing streak came to an end Saturday night at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour. Mason Hooper scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period as Eastman edged the Yellowhead Chiefs 3-2. Roan Coe and Declan Whiteman also scored for the Selects who won for the first time since October 26th. Whiteman’s marker on the power play with just 14 seconds left in the second period tied the game at 2-2. Eastman’s Francois Gagnon made 35 saves.


Bailey Grunewald made 28 saves as the Eastman Selects downed the Interlake Lightning 3-1 Saturday afternoon in Niverville. Abby Dixon, Jenna Sellen and Pandora Turcotte did the goal scoring for the Selects who head off to Brampton, Ontario next weekend for the Brampton 2Nations Tournament.


The Springfield Xtreme and Lorette Comets were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League. Ky Stewart scored twice and Cayden St. Laurent had a goal and two helpers as the Xtreme beat the Niverville Clippers 6-3. Jacob DaSilva, Evan Veinot and Aidan Avanthay also scored for Springfield. Derek Plett, Caleb Funk and Teo Lambert replied for the Clippers. Trey Dixon and Calum Tremblay scored two goals each as the defending champion Comets downed Red River 6-4. Devon Weir and Matt Ramsay also scored for Lorette. Andrew Dyck, Braden Hildebrand, Caden Krahn and Andy Boger did the goal scoring for the Mudbugs.


Aidan Ticknor scored twice and Damon Nash and Zachary Skiba combined to make 38 saves as Beausejour beat the Lundar Falcons 4-1. Mark Mroz and Brady Bowes also scored for the Comets.


The Morden Bombers and Portage Islanders were winners in the SEMHL Saturday night. Jory Mullin and Adam Hughesman had two goals each as the Bombers beat the Carman Beavers 7-5. Jens Meilleur had a goal and three assists as the Islanders downed the Warren Mercs 6-3.


The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice both lost Saturday night. Brandon dropped a 6-4 decision to the Lethbridge Hurricanes at Westoba Place. Nate Danielson, Calder Anderson, Roger McQueen and Andrei Malyavin scored for the Wheat Kings who trailed 3-0 early in the second period. Winnipeg fell 5-2 to the Blades in Saskatoon. Ty Nash and Aiden Oiring scored for the Ice.


Alex Limoges and Declan Chisholm scored third period power play goals as Manitoba downed the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-1. Oskari Salminen made 24 saves in net for the Moose.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed defensive end Willie Jefferson to a one-year contract extension. The Beaumont, Texas native returns in 2023 for what will be his fourth season with the Blue Bombers and ninth in the CFL. Jefferson, who was named a West Division All-Star, lead the football club in quarterback sacks with seven, adding 33 tackles, one interception for a touchdown, two forced fumbles and 10 pass knockdowns.
