The Carillon Sultans open the 2023 Manitoba Junior Baseball League season Sunday. The Sultans will play a doubleheader against the St. James A’s at A.D. Penner Park.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost 10-0 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats. The RailCats plated five runs in the third inning and tacked on three more in the fifth. The only Winnipeg hit was a two-out seventh inning single by catcher Chris Burgess.
The host Portage Terriers scored eight second period goals en route to a 12-2 victory over the Kam River Fighting Walleye Saturday night at the 2023 Centennial Cup National Junior “A” Hockey Championship at Stride Place. Ryan Botterill had a pair of goals for the Terriers. Austin Peters and Rory Neill each had a goal and three assists. Portage has a 2-0 preliminary round record and will face the Battlefords North Stars on Monday night. The Steinbach Pistons (0-1-1) will meet Kam River Sunday night.
The Winnipeg Ice gave up three third period goals and dropped a 4-2 decision to the Seattle Thunderbirds at Canada Life Centre. The Western Hockey League’s best-of-seven final is tied at one. Winnipeg Jets prospect Brad Lambert had a pair of goals for the Western Conference champions including the insurance marker with 2:46 left in regulation. Zach Benson had both goals for the Ice. The series now shifts to Seattle for games three, four and five. Game three goes Tuesday night.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers main camp begins today at IG Field. The football club’s first practice session is from 9 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. The Bombers first exhibition game is Saturday, May 27th against the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium.
The Morris Mavericks, who won back-to-back Provincial AA High School varsity girls volleyball championships in 1996 & 1997 were inducted into the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association’s Hall of Fame Saturday in Winnipeg. The Hall of Fame class of 2023 also includes former MHSAA executive director Morris Glimcher, Ken Overby of Teulon Collegiate, Gord Nixon of Major Pratt School in Russell and Daryl Ford of Glenboro School.
