The 12-1 Winnipeg Blue Bombers face the 3-9 Tiger-Cats in Hamilton. The opening kickoff is at 3 p.m. Safety Brandon Alexander will make his first start of the season in the Bombers secondary. Alexander missed the first 13 games of the season rehabbing from off-season knee surgery. The 2021 CFL all-star suffered the injury during last November’s Grey Cup game against the Ti-Cats in Hamilton. Receiver Drew Wolitarsky will not play. He suffered an ankle injury in the Bombers victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Banjo Bowl last Saturday.


Ian Amsbaugh scored twice and Cole Plowman made 25 saves as the Steinbach Pistons opened the 2022-23 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season with a 6-4 victory over the expansion Niverville Nighthawks at the T.G. Smith Centre. Nate Goodbrandson, Nicholas Mikan, Ty Paisley and Davis Fry also scored for the Pistons. Gavin Gunderson, Brendan Bottem, Carter Spirig and Brendan Kerr replied for the Nighthawks who play their home opener tonight against the Pistons.


The Eastman Selects played to a 4-4 tie with the RINK Hockey Academy in their opening game Friday at the Central Plains Capitals Female U18 AAA Pre-season Showcase in Portage. The Selects will meet the Winnipeg Ice and Weyburn Goldwings today.


The Eastman Selects take on the Brandon Wheat Kings today and Yellowhead Chiefs on Sunday at the Southwest Cougars pre-season tournament in Souris.


The Brandon Wheat Kings lost 4-3 to the Warriors in Moose Jaw. Nate Danielson had a pair of goals for the Wheat Kings who will play their pre-season finale tonight against the Warriors at Westoba Place.


The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 3-2 decision to the Edmonton Oilers in their first of three games at the Young Stars Classic in Penticton. Brad Lambert, who was selected in the first round (30th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft, had a goal and an assist for the Jets. Winnipeg’s next game is Sunday against the Vancouver Canucks.
