The Steinbach Huskies, Red River Mudbugs and Landmark Blues were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League. Keyan Grimard scored three third period goals and Brandon Palmer stopped all 18 shots he faced as Steinbach shutdown the Lorette Comets 6-0. Blair McGowan, Brandon Thiessen and Ian Friesen also scored for the first place Huskies who improved to 17-1 on the season. Lucas Dyck and Andrew Dyck each had two goals and an assist as the Mudbugs beat Niverville 6-3. Elijah Durksen had all three goals for the Clippers. Zane Koop scored 4:01 into overtime to lift the Blues past the Macdonald Swarm 4-3. 


Dominik Wasik made 18 saves as the Steinbach Pistons shutout the Winnipeg Freeze 4-0 at the T.G. Smith Centre. Ian Amsbaugh, Langley Kruggel, Ty Paisley and Landon Roberts did the goal scoring for the Pistons. Freeze netminder Keegan Gordon faced 56 shots. 


Mason Hooper had three goals and an assist and Jaxon Loewen stopped 24 shots as the Eastman Selects blanked the Norman Northstars 10-0 at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour. Jeremiah Warkentine added a pair of goals for the Selects and singles went to Braden Berube, Calem Normandeau, Colton Pakoo, Luc De Gagne and Steele Jowett. Eastman scored four times on the power play and once shorthanded. 


Orieanna Kennedy made 41 saves as the Eastman Selects shutout the Winnipeg Avros 2-0 in Niverville. Maisie Breckon and Sophia Heidinger did the goal scoring for the Selects. 


The top two teams in the SEMHL met Sunday afternoon in Ste. Anne. Steve Christie made 42 saves and Tanner Lesann, Robby Moar and Brett Brooks scored in a 3:37 span of the third period as Portage downed the Aces 4-2. Jens Meilleur added an empty net goal for the Islanders who improved to 11-0 on the season and moved two points ahead of Ste. Anne in the race for first place. Caleb Paisley and Yvan Pattyn replied for the Aces. Phil Letkeman had three goals and two assists as the Winkler Royals bounced the Maroons 11-0 in Altona. Travis Klassen stopped 40 shots in recording the shutout. 


Zach Benson had a hat trick and Matthew Savoie had two goals and two assists as Winnipeg doubled up on the Portland Winterhawks 6-3. Carson Lambos also scored for the Ice who lead 2-0 after the first period and 5-1 after 40 minutes. 


Canada won its preliminary round opener 8-0 over Finland at the World Women's U18 Hockey Championship in Ostersund, Sweden. Caitlin Kraemer and Alex Law had three points each and Arianne Leblanc made nine saves in recording the shutout. Canada's next game is today against the host Swede's. St. Adolphe's Avery Pickering is on the Team Canada roster. 


Kyle Connor scored his 18th, 19th and 20th goals of the season and Pierre-Luc Dubois had four assists as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Vancouver Canucks 7-4 at Canada Life Centre. Nikolaj Ehlers added a goal and two helpers for the Jets who have won five in a row. Axel Jonsson-Fjalby, Dylan DeMelo and Morgan Barron also scored for Winnipeg. 


The NFL playoff matchups are set for Super Wild Card Weekend. The Buffalo Bills meet the Miami Dolphins, the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Baltimore Ravens and the L.A. Chargers face the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Kansas City Chiefs have the bye in the AFC. In the NFC the San Francisco 49'ers meet the Seattle Seahawks, the Minnesota Vikings take on the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Philadelphia Eagles have the bye. The 3-14 Chicago Bears will have the first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
