Steinbach’s Jordon Heppner is the U SPORTS men’s volleyball Rookie of the Year. The first-year University of Manitoba middle lead the Bisons with a .338 hitting percentage on 240 attacks. The Steinbach Regional Secondary School graduate, who was named the Canada West Rookie of the Year last week, tied for seventh in the conference with 1.01 blocks per set. Heppner was also named to the U SPORTS All-Rookie Team.


Green Valley will face Gabrielle Roy in the semifinals at the Provincial AA High School Varsity Boys Basketball Championship in Virden. The Pirates beat MacGregor 85-69 while Les Roys downed the Hapnot Kopper Kings of Flin Flin 78-54. Ross L. Gray of Sprague will meet Glenboro/Baldur in the semifinals at the A boys championship in Grandview. The Raiders edged Pinawa 62-60. The Panthers will take on St. Laurent in the consolation semifinals. Ross L. Gray will face Frontier Mosakahiken in the consolation semifinals at the A girls championship at Gilbert Plains. The Raiders lost 49-39 to Rivers.


The Winnipeg Jets lost 3-0 to the Boston Bruins at Canada Life Centre. Jeremy Swayman made 35 saves in recording the shutout for the Bruins who won their NHL best 51st game of the season. It was the fourth time the Jets have been shutout this season and all four have been at home.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced the signing of American quarterback Billy Hall, American defensive tackle O’Bryan Goodson, American receivers Manasseh Bailey Tre Turner, and National defensive back Jordan Veltri.


The Steinbach Huskies defeated the Red River Mudbugs 4-3 in the game one of the best-of-seven final. Huskies coach Ben Plett will join Clayton Dreger on the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League Report which airs Fridays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
