Steinbach Pistons defenseman Warren Clark was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the sixth round of the 2023 National Hockey League Draft. The 18-year-old Riverside, Ontario native, who will be playing NCAA Division l Hockey at St. Cloud State University this fall, had 38 points in his rookie season with the Turnbull Cup champion Pistons. Three Manitobans were selected on the final day of the draft. The Philadelphia Flyers took Brandon Wheat Kings netminder Carson Bjarnason of Carberry in the second round and Portland Winter Hawks defenseman Carter Sotheran of Sanford in round five. Jayden Perron of Winnipeg, who played in the USHL with the Chicago Steel, was picked by the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round. The Winnipeg Jets took forward Zach Nehring of Shattuck St. Mary's in round three, forward Jacob Julien of the London Knight and goaltender Thomas Milic of the Seattle Thunderbirds in round five and forward Connor Lewis of the Kamloops Blazers in round seven.
Sienna Gudnason of Glenboro School, Gianna Watt of Hapnot Collegiate in Flin Flon, Mia Sawatsky of W.C. Miller Collegiate in Altona and Kyu Fust of Dakota Collegiate are the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association's A, AA, AAA & AAAA Female Athletes of the Year. Kieran Reid of Nellie McClung Collegiate in Manitou, Chad Pouteau of Prairie Mountain High School, Nicholas Parrott of Churchill High School and Colson Smith of Garden City Collegiate are the A, AA, AAA & AAAA Male Athletes of the Year. Mia Sawatsky and Kieran Reid were also named the overall Athletes of the Year.
The Carillon Sultans head into the Canada Day long weekend in third place in the Manitoba Junior Baseball League. The Sultans are 12-9 and won't play until Wednesday when they face the Interlake Blue Jays at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach. The St. James A's are in first place at 14-9 while the Elmwood Giants are next at 13-8.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes five-game winning streak is over. The Fish gave up six runs in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the sixth and lost 13-2 to the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Goldeyes begin a three-game weekend series against the Monarchs in Kansas City tonight.
