Artist and researcher Margruite Krahn is teaching a specialty class this month in Steinbach as part of the Mennonite Heritage Village’s exhibit Resurfacing: Mennonite Floor Patterns by Margruite Krahn.

Krahn will teach participants how to make their own floor cloth. She spent a lot of time unearthing historical Mennonite floor patterns.

Andrea Klassen, senior curator at Mennonite Heritage Village, says the class will be a full day workshop with Krahn.

Special fabric is used to make floor cloths.

“I wasn’t familiar with this material,” says Klassen. “Duck canvas is what it’s called. Super durable, it's meant to be on the floor, meant to be walked on. So, what participants will come away from this workshop with, is this floor cloth that they've created for themselves, either based on their own imagination or an historical pattern, led through this process by the artist.”

Klassen says it is interesting to see the detailed work of traditional Mennonites, and to learn about the interesting tools they used to create brilliant patterns.

The workshop will be able to accommodate 10 participants and registration is required by March 14th with the class scheduled for March 20th.

The cost is $200 which includes the supplies.
