The Superintendent of the Hanover School Division says nothing more has come of an incident last Thursday at Southwood School. Randy Dueck says staff spotted something out of the ordinary and took action immediately.

"We had a report of a male wandering around the perimeter of the playground at Southwood School. He never was on the school property but was suspicious enough that we took notice of this individual. This individual never made any contact with students. And then, when we approached the individual, he quickly left the area. We did contact the RCMP and notified the nearby schools and really haven't heard anything since. This individual did not show up again on Friday and we haven't heard back from the RCMP."

Dueck says seeing something out of the ordinary and taking action is part of the extra care that Hanover schools take these days.

"It's just the extra care that we take nowadays. When we see something that's a little bit different or a little bit unusual, we pay attention, we notify nearby people and we see if it becomes something more than that. There was nothing wrong done by this individual, just a different kind of behaviour that we wanted to pay attention to."

Dueck adds this serve as a good reminder for all of us and the division has issued a note accordingly.

"We've provided some suggestions like kids should be walking in groups where they can, somewhere in a place where it's easy to find help if needed. If they feel threatened for any reason, they should contact a trusted adult immediately, they should be aware of their surroundings and be cautious if they come into contact with an unknown person and should never get into a car with a stranger. These are always good reminders for us, to be reminding our kids and to be reminding our community of some of the simple things they can do, just to be aware."
