A decision by Steinbach city council is not sitting well with some residents of the Meadows.  Council has approved a variation to allow a house to be built on land zoned for agriculture.  The property is immediately west of the Meadows along the south side of McKenzie Avenue.  Neighbors feel the city should have first re-zoned the land to residential before allowing construction.  Councillor David Banman agrees, noting the re-zoning process would give neighbors a chance to have their say on the issue.  He adds Steinbach has frequently criticized the RM of Hanover for using the variation process to get around re-zoning.  Now it's doing the same thing.  But the rest of council says the land is designated in the city's development plan to one day become residential and they are comfortable with granting the variation.
