08-VARSITY
Varsity Sabres competing in the SRSS gymnasium

The SRSS hallways are buzzing with student pride these days as the varsity volleyball team looks to win the school's third banner in only two days.

The junior varsity volleyball team and the school's football team both won their league championships Thursday evening. It will be unfamiliar ground for the Varsity team, the last time they played in a game of this magnitude was when they lost in the 2008/2009 final.

"This team has a bunch of experience on it," says the team's head coach Henry Kasdorf on what's difference about this team compared to the past years. "They're twelve grade twelves who will be graduating this program. They went through this process last year and have learned how to win."

The Varsity team is currently ranked 7th overall out of all the high schools in Manitoba. The boys beat the 6th ranked College Jeanne Sauve Olympians in three straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) in the semi finals this past Wednesday.

Kasdorf says he doesn't remember the last time the Varsity program has won a league championship, and adds that they will need to be ready for the 9th ranked Dakota Lancers in order to change that outcome.

"Dakota and coach Hudson over there have a strong program. We will have to have good communication on the floor and we're going to have to be ready. They are going to battle and we are going to battle. It's going to be a war."

These two teams have only met once this season and that was back on September 24th when the Sabres beat the Lancers 3-1; 23-25, 25-19, 25-13, and 25-23.

The championship game starts Friday 7:30pm at the SRSS gymnasium.
