The Steinbach Regional varsity boys and varsity girls volleyball teams captured the South Central Athletic Conference AAAA championship banners in their home gym Friday night.

The Sabres dropped the second and third sets and then rallied to win the final two and beat the Dakota Lancers in the girls final.

The SRSS defeated the Lancers 25-19, 24-26, 20-25, 25-17, 19-17 and won the SCAC championship for the second year in a row.

Steinbach Regional varsity boys completed the SRSS sweep of Dakota Collegiate as they downed the Lancers 25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19.

“That was the cleanest volleyball we played all season,” noted Sabres assistant coach Kyle Martens. “Our defense was a game changer and lead to being able to run a great offense. Every guy on the roster came to play and was focused on their task. The home crowd was amazing as well! So many people came out and made a lot of noise. The gym was electric for both finals and that helped make it a really fun night!”

The SRSS went undefeated in the South Central Athletic Conference.

Steinbach Regional was 8-0 during the regular season and then beat Glenlawn and Dakota in the playoffs.

“We had a lot of skilled players and we have guys who like to play,” commented Martens on their perfect run through the SCAC. “Even when we have rough practices, the guys bring the best every game and it leads to pretty consistent volleyball. Our team has a lot of character and team chemistry and that also goes a long way in high school sports.”

Both Sabres teams qualify for the Provincial AAAA varsity volleyball championships which begin November 24th in Winnipeg.
