The RM of La Broquerie has submitted an official objection to a proposed development northeast of the Old Tom Road, Loewen Boulevard intersection.

On July 5th, the City of Steinbach gave first reading to both a rezoning bylaw and a proposed change to the city’s Official Community Plan which would allow this development to go forward.

The proposed development would include high-density, low-density, and single-family housing as well as commercial mixed-use space.

Though it doesn't directly border the RM of La Broquerie, Reeve Lewis Weiss says the development straddles an important drainage ditch for an area inside their municipality.

"We really rely on that drain and if they are going to fill it up, draining all of this extra farmland into there by developing it, the water that we send through there, will there be enough room for that water? It could cause problems for the City of Steinbach and for us as well and everybody in between, that is one of the big concerns there."

La Broquerie's resolution of opposition cites concerns that this development could restrict drainage in their municipality and could cause the area to become prone to flooding, possibly turning it into wetlands.

Their opposition will be put forward and considered by Steinbach City Council at a public hearing on September 6th.
