Council for the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne now has received a letter from the province regarding plans for speed reduction on Provincial Road 210 at Seine Road.

Reeve Paul Saindon says the province has provided written commitment to reduce the speed limit along that stretch of highway.”

“They have, on paper,” Saindon confirms. “We have yet to see the signage, but they are pretty much committed at this point having written a letter that explains the situation that they're about to undertake. So, we're holding their feet to the fire and hoping this comes around.”

Council submitted a request last year to reduce the speed limit on PR 210, to 70 kilometres per hour from Seine Road to PR 207.

In June of this year, the council reported there was a verbal commitment, but it felt that was not good enough. So, a request was made to get that in writing. With written confirmation, Saindon is more confident that the changes will take place.

Although no timeline was given as to when the new signs will go up, Saindon is hopeful that it will still happen this summer.

“You wouldn’t think it’s a huge endeavour to go out and put a few signs up,” he says, but notes that Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure might be overwhelmed this summer with flood-related issues.

On June 4th of this year, a vehicle crashed into the bridge on PR 210 just east of the Town of Ste. Anne, and it started on fire. The driver, a 48-year-old man from Steinbach, was killed.

The stretch of highway that Saindon says needs a lower speed limit is a long curve with a narrow bridge. The current speed limit is 100 km/h. It is believed that a lower speed limit and proper signage to indicate a curve and bridge might improve safety in the area.
