Grain corn acres in the southeast have seen a bit of a decline this spring.
Pioneer Hybrid seed rep Marc Hutlet says because the crop is high input and fertilizer prices were up this spring there has been a move away from grain corn.  Most of the seeding was done by May long weekend with much of that in the ground by end of April.  Right now corn is 6 to 8 leaf which is great for this time of year.  He notes some of the fields are needing a bit of moisture as rain has been quite spotty so far.  And there were some fields that were set back about a week by the frost in late May but as a whole corn looks good.  Hutlet feels producers are pretty optimistic this year and enjoy having an actual crop to manage instead of just a field of black dirt.
