The weather has been colder and snowier this winter and that has led to an unusual number of closure days for schools in the Southeast.

Hanover School Division has closed its schools for nine days this winter, which is a record number between 2000 and 2022.

Even though this number of closures does not happen very often, Amos says they are still mindful of the impact this has on students and looking for ways to reduce the impact.

“We know it has an impact on students,” she says, as they hear from parents and students who are concerned about getting assignments completed and attaining the necessary credits.

“For students graduating, we always provide other opportunities, and our teachers will work really hard with them for credit attainment that they need to graduate,” Amos notes.

She adds that the first point of contact should always be the teacher of the subject. Amos says guidance counselors and school administration can also be accessed for help with answering questions and responding to concerns.

“We know in-person learning is the best,” says Amos.

She says virtual learning is a good option in certain situations; particularly when someone is ill or dealing with anxiety.

“Virtual learning might be offered on cold days to help facilitate and keep some learning going,” she says.
