The Steinbach Regional Secondary School’s two football teams wrapped up their respective 2022 seasons at the end of October and now work begins for the program’s 13th season.

The Sabres varsity team could have spent the season in the Winnipeg High School Football League’s Division 2 but SRSS football co-ordinator Jamie Peters was adamant that his squad would play against the league’s best in the Potter Division.

The SRSS went winless against the Vincent Massey Trojans, Dakota Lancers, Grant Park Pirates, Oak Park Raiders and St. Paul’s Crusaders.

Steinbach Regional finished 0-8 but saved their best performance for their season finale.

Austin Neufeld carried the ball 22 times for 142 yards and a touchdown in the Sabres 38-29 loss to Vincent Massey. Quarterback Bradey Dornez threw touchdown passes to Nicco Devuono-Hayto and Zane Friesen. Jackson Gamaldo returned a fumble 60 yards for a major.

Head coach Kerry Friesen’s junior varsity team had an 0-6 regular season record and then dropped a 51-13 decision to St. Paul’s in the quarterfinals. Nigel Reader and Toby Plett had rushing touchdowns for the Sabres who dressed 27 grade 9’s in 2022.

Clayton Dreger asked Jamie Peters, who was instrumental in the Steinbach Regional football program’s start in 2010, to comment on the varsity team’s 2022 season
