A new Speaker has been elected for the Manitoba Legislative Assembly.
Tom Lindsey, NDP MLA for Flin Flon will take on that role. Lindsey replaces outgoing Speaker Myrna Driedger, who had served as Speaker since 2016, but retired from Manitoba politics following the 2023 provincial election.
"Myrna was a fantastic Speaker who worked incredibly hard for Manitobans," says Progressive Conservative Deputy Leader and Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen. "As an MLA, she served her constituents well, and in the House, she upheld long-standing processes and traditions, as well as presided over some truly unprecedented times in the Legislature over the past few years."
Lindsey has been serving as the MLA for Flin Flon since 2016, a constituency that encompasses 15 northern First Nations.
Meanwhile, the first session of the 43rd Legislature will assemble on November 21st with the reading of the speech from the throne by Lieutenant Governor Anita Neville.
