Meals on Wheels gets a boost at Taste of Summer Charity BBQ

The warm, summer sun made for perfect weather to enjoy a barbecue lunch and generous people came out to show support for the Meals on Wheels program which is run by the Pat Porter Active Living Centre in Steinbach.

Executive Director Audrey Harder is beyond grateful for the $1,964.30 that was raised during the 2-hour lunch.

“It’s going to make a huge impact,” she says. “It’s going to save us a lot of money in grocery shopping. It’s going to let us keep things at a good price. We are so excited, so grateful for all the support, all the people who came out.”

Harder also points out that we can further help to keep the meal costs low by placing orders for meals through the program.

“The more often people order, it actually saves us money in the long run because we can order in bulk,” she says, noting that bulk purchases are more cost effective. And the program is open to people of all ages.

The Meals on Wheels program has experienced significant growth, Harder says.

“And we’re going to continue to grow,” she says. “The need is going to continue to be there.”

Seeing the need for affordable and nutritious meals, Harder is thankful to the business community for supporting local charities, and thankful for the public and the generous donations.

“We really appreciate it,” she says. “Thank you.”

The Taste of Summer Charity Barbecue continues during the remainder of August at the corner of Main and Lumber in front of the Steinbach Credit Union from 11 AM-1 PM.
