Crow Wing Trail Board Member Wayne Arseny clears a section of trail.

A Manitoban trail is doing something no other Canadian trail has ever done - be fully maintained by it's own employees.

Crow Wing Trail runs from Emerson to the Winnipeg Floodway, and fully maintaining it throughout this summer is quite a feat considering it's 191 kilometers long.

Murielle Bugera, President of the Crow Wing Trail Association says trails across Canada are watching them to see what kind of success they have.  Bugera says they have good reason to be watching the progress made on Crow Wing Trail.

"Because we have some representation of a wide variety of terrain, it really is a good setting because it would probably represent a lot of the sections across Manitoba."

She explains why they chose to fully maintain it themselves.

"The fact that we had been struggling with how to (maintain it). We kept identifying the need but we could see that we just couldn't do it, and now we're seeing why because it surpasses what volunteers can do."

The trail had previously been maintained by volunteers.  Bugera adds they have already accomplished a fair amount of work on the trail.

"(Board Member Wayne Arseny) identified the equipment he needed and has mowed the trail from one end to the other.  Yesterday (Monday) he finished installing more signs, and now we're starting to address any other issues that are needed."

Bugera says they are waiting to see how much success they have this year before they decide if they will do it again.
