Council for the Rural Municipality of Ritchot will consider a large housing development for Ile des Chenes.

A public hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday for a developer looking to build 150 rental units between Highway 59 and the old Highway 59, south of the existing condominiums.

"They are going to be a nice mix of townhouses, apartment style and bungalow," explains Ritchot Mayor Chris Ewen. "Ile des Chenes is getting a great opportunity."

Ewen explains right now there is very high demand for more housing in Ile des Chenes, especially for rental units.

"We're finding millennials are renting more than they are purchasing because housing prices are starting to soar," says Ewen. "So finding rental properties anywhere is a very hard thing to do, and especially in Ritchot."

He suggests 150 units could accommodate up to 400 new residents for the municipality.

The public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at the municipal office beginning at 7 pm.

Ewen admits that some of the condominiums built previously in Ile des Chenes concerned some of the residents nearby. But he says those condos and residents have become part of the community with hockey teams filling and parks being used more often.
