Part 2 of our look at immigration in the Hanover School Division continues by exploring cultural diversity.English As An Additional Language Coordinator Val Schellenberg told us Tuesday the growth in the Division has jumped due to immigrants settling in the southeast.  The newcomers are bringing much language and rich cultural heritage with them.  She notes Hanover has more than 30 languages represented and students are begining to appreciate the world is a big place and it's happening right here in our schools.  Hanover has a goal that all students become multi-cultural, multi-literate and multi-lingual by continuing their own heritage and adding to it.  While newcomers to Canada have many opportunities to learn about our language and culture we cannot expect them to embrace them overnight.  Schellenberg says the settlelment process is very overwhelming and takes time to complete.  Only then can these families start to understand the benefits of all the available programs and begin to participate.  One way of celebrating this cultural diversity is being explored by Mitchell Middle School.  They are planning to host a multi-cultural arts fair this spring.
