With harvest underway, Grain Growers of Canada is asking farmers to consider donating some grain to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank to help people dealing with the famine in East Afria.

"If you find yourself with a good harvest, maybe this is a good year, with the drought in Africa, to step up and donate some of the grain. It's the least we can do as farmers hear to help feed farmers elsewhere," says Grain Growers president Stephen Vandervalk.

He says Canadian farmers are fortunate to have support systems tin place to protect against the extreme challenges facing farmers in Africa.

"We do have government that supports us with moisture payments, crop insurance and all these different things that help us when we have disasters, but in Africa they don't really have anything."

Vandervalk says the process for donating is quite simple.

"Basically any elevator you deliver at, you can just state I want to add one tonne, five tonnes, whatever you want to give to the Foodgrains Bank. Not only that, but the federal government then matches your donation."
