The date was Friday, March 13th and that morning the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association cancelled the 2020 Provincial AA & AAAA High School Hockey Championships, the Provincial A/AA, AAA & AAAA Junior Varsity Basketball Championships and the Provincial AAAA High School Varsity Basketball championships because of COVID-19.

The Ross L. Gray Raiders of Sprague had lost their opening game 51-35 to Souris/Deloraine at the A/AA JV girls championship in Teulon the previous day while the Niverville Panthers were the second seed at the A/AA JV boys championship in Carberry and were told they wouldn't be playing their quarterfinal that night against the host Cougars.

The AAA JV championships were hosted by Elmwood School in Winnipeg. The Edward Schreyer Barons of Beausejour didn't get a chance to play their girls quarterfinal against the Dauphin Clippers. The Lorette Scorpions lost 82-46 to the host Giants in the boys play-in game.

Lorette girls and Ste. Anne boys were to host the Provincial AAA High School Varsity Basketball Championships the following weekend.

Clayton Dreger asked MHSAA executive director Chad Falk to reflect on the association's decision to cancel the 2020 Provincial High School Hockey and Basketball Championships on Friday, March 13th
