RCMP in Manitoba would like to remind the public that motorists can be fined for travelling down a closed highway.

Highway closures in the southeast include:

  • Highway 1 from the Manitoba/ Saskatchewan border to Richer
  • Highway 12 from Ste. Anne to the Canada/ United States border
  • Highway 14 from Highway 75 to Rosenfeld
  • Highway 52 from Highway 59 to Mitchell
  • Highway 59 from Winnipeg to south of Highway 23
  • Highway 75 from Winnipeg to Morris
  • Provincial Road 201 from Highway 30 to Highway 59

According to RCMP, the current conditions on the roads and highways around Manitoba are making driving conditions very poor. Blizzard conditions, blowing snow, and the cold weather are creating slippery, low-visibility conditions that are dangerous to motorists.

RCMP have received multiple calls regarding stranded motorists and people who are stuck in the ditch. At this time, no physical injuries have been reported and officers will assist as they are able, considering the amount of calls and the condition of the roads.

Police urge the public that if it is absolutely necessary to head out, that you make sure you are dressed warm, that you have a full tank of gas and that somebody is aware of the route you are taking. If you are on the road and you get stranded, you should call police, make sure your tailpipe is clear of snow and then only turn your car on intermittently to stay warm.

Also, police remind the public that a closed highway means travel is not allowed for any reason. There is a potential for charges under the Highway Traffic Act for a fine of $203. Also, emergency vehicles may not be able to reach you if help is needed.
