Steinbach City Council has given first reading to a bylaw that would allow for higher density housing to be built in the new Parkhill subdivision in the Southwest corner of the Steinbach.

The Parkhill subdivision is on the north side of McKenzie Avenue about one kilometre west of Brandt Street. A parcel of land in the Parkhill development has also been set aside for a future school.

The area is currently zoned for single-family, low, and medium-density housing. Mayor Earl Funk says council is encouraged by this rezoning bylaw that would add high-density development into the mix.

"I think it works well because we are looking to build density in the City of Steinbach, inside our boundaries. I think this works well to have a good mix of residential in every neighbourhood."

Funk says now that council has given first reading to the rezoning bylaw, residents of Steinbach will have a chance to give feedback at a public hearing that will most likely be scheduled for early March.
