A farmer west of Steinbach says the crop year is off to a great start. Kevin Peters of HerbSigWill Farms at Randolph says crops have emerged and are growing nicely. He adds soil

Sprayers are a common sight these days on fields here in the southeast.moisture is okay for now but rain would be welcome.

"A shower would be nice. We're starting to dry out on top but there's definitely still moisture at the roots underneath."

Peters says they are currently spraying spring cereal crops for weeds which will keep them busy, on and off, for much of this month. He notes, after cool weather in May, the heat that arrived last week is providing quite a boost, especially for heat-loving crops like corn.

"It'll definitely boost our crops and give us the needed heat to keep everything on track and growing nicely. I would expect corn to stretch and knee high by the 4th of July isn't a far stretch for us."

Peters says their farm was one of many here in southeastern Manitoba where winter wheat did not survive the winter. He adds all of those acres have replanted, much of them to spring wheat and some to soybeans.
