“I’m bored” is not something two cousins from Steinbach will be heard saying this summer. For the fourth year in a row, Brooke Peters and Koda Reimer are raising money for families dealing with cancer.

It all started back in the summer of 2018 when Brooke, then 8 years old said they were looking for something to do and thought it would be a good idea to raise money for cancer research because a number of their family members had battled cancer. That year, Koda‘s parents had agreed to double whatever the final total would be, which ended up helping the girls bring in $1200. Over the years they’ve stuck with the formula that first worked, selling ice tea, cookies and brownies for a dollar each.

“The first two years it was for the Cancer Care Centre in Steinbach. For the third year, we changed it up and raised money for the Malmsten family, whose 16-year-old twins (Mason and Sierra) were going through cancer and this year we are raising money for Marek Hiebert, who is almost 7 years old and has been going through cancer for a year.”

ly fast, but not really. “

When asked who decided that this year's funds were going to Marek and his family, the young ladies had this to say,

“Actually, that was my mom. We had messaged a bunch of our church pastors and asked if they had any ideas of who we could do it for. One of them, Brock, messaged my mom back and he said that his neighbour's kid, Marek had been going through cancer so. That's why my mom, well, we all decided to choose him.”

The 2021 fundraising event is off to a great start, as the young entrepreneurs report that they have already presold 20 pans of brownies.

The fundraiser is taking place this week Wednesday and Thursday (July 21 and 22) at 418 Walnut Street in Steinbach from 10 am to 7 pm both days. They have expanded their sale to now include brownies, cupcakes, cookies, iced tea, lemonade for one dollar each, and a water bottle for 50 cents.

They also have a GoFundMe page, “if there are people who can't make it to the sale, we usually post a Go Fund Me link on some of the videos that we have. So, then people could go there and donate as well.”
