With fall yard cleanup winding down for another year, the Rural Municipality of Hanover has wrapped up its community compost depots.

Jason Peters is Manager of Recreation and Community Services. He says they hosted 57 depots this year, with the last one taking place at the end of October. The 57 depots is a similar number to how many they held in 2017.

The organic waste that is collected is delivered to Overton Environmental Enterprises near Giroux. In 2017 they brought 36 tonnes and Peters notes they are still waiting to hear the final number for 2018.

"Hopefully it was a little more than that," he says.

The compost program has been in existence for several years in Hanover. Peters notes they did not make many changes for 2018 and expects it will stay much the same for 2019.

Hanover budgeted $16,000 this year to run the program and Peters says it is a success.

"Absolutely, there is great buy-in in the communities," he says. "Great opportunity for us to be a little more environmentally aware and it seems to be picking up momentum each year."
