The Steinbach Fire Department's pagers went off just over 300 times last year.
Chief Mark Loewen says the total number of calls is about the same as 2006 but the breakdown is different in that they attended around 110 motor vehicle accidents which is up by about 40. He believes the number of car accidents is up due to more traffic in the area. Loewen says the types of calls they're going to has changed in that they're going to less fires and more residential and commercial false alarms.  Meanwhile, he says they have an excellent crew and seem to have no problem recruiting enough volunteers to be firefighters.  Loewen explains a year and a half ago they hired 8 more from a list of 30 applicants.  Those 8 new recruits all passed their Level 1 training in November so Loewen says their staffing situation looks excellent.
