The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced enhancements to the country's feed ban on specified risk materials.  Dr. Brian Evans says the most important change will prohibit SRM's from being used in all livestock feed, pet food, and fertilizers.  The Agency will also control the collection, treatment, and disposal of SRM's by way of a permit and verification system.
Evans notes the enhancements will eliminate more than 99% of potential infectivity from entering the feed system.  A phase in period of approximately 1 year will be provided to allow regulated parties to make the proper adjustments.  An additional 6 months will be provided to small operations which may face challenges in complying with the new regulations.
