The newly twinned section of Highway #59 opened to traffic at 1:00 Friday afternoon. The 15.5 kilometers goes from Mondor Road to just south of Ile Des Chenes. Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Ron Lemieux says this will improve safety, noting there have been a number of fatalities on that stretch of road. He adds it will also improve the movement of people and goods for the entire southeast region. The project cost $25 million. Lemieux says there are no immediate plans to twin Highway #59 any further because traffic counts don't justify it at this time. Highways officials ask you to take extra caution in adjusting to the reconfigured highway.
